Liposuction or liposculpture is one of the most dramatic procedures which can be performed to contour the body and create a new look. Liposuction is a great way to remove unwanted fat and contour various areas of the body. The procedure is generally performed with the patient completely asleep or under "twilight" anesthesia. Several very small, carefully concealed incisions are made and specialized instruments are used to remove the fatty tissue. The most common areas treated are the tummy, flanks (love handles), back, thighs, hips, knees, upper arms, and chin. Liposuction of the tummy, flank, and low back give a dramatically thinner and defined waistline. Liposculpture of the thighs and hips give a longer leg, leaner and toned look. Each area treated tends to further enhance appearance.
Liposuction varies depending of the amount of liposuction performed but usually takes between 1 and 2 hours.
How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Liposuction Frequently Ask Questions
Liposuction is a popular body contouring technique that allows Dr. Smith to precisely remove excess fat. Dr. Smith performs liposuction because this technique minimizes complications and discomfort. Dr. Smith utilizes both traditional liposuction techniques as well as more cutting edge technology with VASER Liposuction. Most often, a combination of these techniques is required to obtain the final shape and contour that most patients are looking for. The specific operation required to help you obtain your final goal will be customized with you and Dr. Smith during your free consultation.
Before operating, Dr. Smith injects a solution containing epinephrine and lidocaine into the area being treated. This solution minimizes discomfort and constricts the blood vessels to control surgical bleeding. The doctor then inserts a suction tube through discreetly placed incisions, using it to break up and remove fat deposits along with the solution. Though it is very popular on its own for body contouring, liposuction is also useful in many other applications. Dr. Smith also uses liposuction in breast enhancement, tummy tuck, and total body lift, as well as in localized thigh and buttock lift procedures.
Liposuction is a procedure that helps remove excess fat from specific areas of the body that are a concern. Most commonly, liposuction is performed in specific areas of the body where it is difficult to obtain a desired shape. For example, many women have excess fat on lower part of their abdomen that is difficult to get rid of even after exercise. These areas can be improved and flattened with liposuction. Liposuction can also be used throughout the abdomen, thighs, arms and face to help improve contour deformities.
Common areas for liposuction include the neck (under the chin), male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Liposuction may also be used in conjunction with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast reduction/reconstruction or other procedures.
Liposuction is a safe procedure and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. There are some risks associated with liposuction. The most common risks include; bleeding, infection, contour irregularities, and need for touch up operations in the future. The risks associated with the surgery increase with the amount of fatty tissue that is being removed.
If you have excess subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise, or if you want to change the contours of your body, you may be a candidate for liposuction. Dr. Smith will evaluate your general health and the specific areas that you are concerned about at your consultation. He will then make recommendations about the operation and then help you reach your cosmetic goals.
Dr. Smith uses a combination of traditional liposuction and VASER liposuction. Both techniques require several small (1 cm) incisions to allow the passage of a small tube through the fat layers of the area undergoing liposuction. Before operating, Dr. Smith injects a solution containing epinephrine and lidocaine into the area being treated. This solution minimizes discomfort and constricts the blood vessels to control surgical bleeding. The VASER liposuction cannula is used to break down the fatty tissue. This cannula emits an ultrasonic wave that breaks down the fatty tissue, prevents bleeding, and tightens the skin. After this has been performed, a small cannula is used to remove the fatty tissue.
Liposuction is generally well tolerated. Our liposuction patients wear a compression garment for 2-3 weeks, as it helps reduce swelling after liposuction. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Once any soreness decreases, it is often more comfortable to wear lycra or spandex exercise pants. Bruising and swelling usually subside in two to four weeks. The final result takes shape over three to six months. Most patients can return to work several days after surgery with few restrictions.
The answer is sometimes yes, but more often, no. Typically plastic and cosmetic surgery are not covered under insurance. Insurance will cover the cost of some procedures if they are considered reconstructive (as opposed to purely cosmetic) in nature. If you have a medical reason for your procedure to be covered, Dr. Smith will be happy to consult with you and determine if this might be a covered benefit. Dr. Smith accepts a wide variety of insurance companies. Please contact us to see if we accept your insurance.
If your insurance does not cover your procedure, Dr. Smith can give you a quote for surgery and discuss possible financing options.
